With Him, You Can...

Breakthrough Sunrise

Greetings, Dear Friends!

Susie Larson here...

And to those visiting, I say welcome! I post every Wednesday and my sole purpose is to nourish your soul along the way. Each month I give away a $10.00 Starbucks gift card to someone who posts on my blog. So share a story or an insight, bless lots of people, and just maybe you'll win a jolt of java for you and friend!

A Quick Note:

I am thrilled to announce the upcoming release of my next book: "Growing Grateful Kids: Teaching Them to Appreciate an Extraordinary God in Ordinary Places." Let me tell you, I am excited about the message in this book. If you have children at home (or grandchildren you want to influence spiritually), pre-order a copy today. I do believe this book will equip you to parent from a spiritual perspective (but it's loaded with lots of practical application). You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll be inspired and encouraged (that was my goal, anyway). :)

Now on to my topic...

This week my friend Melinda Schmidt (WMBI) and I had a conversation about how so often our God-sized call is somehow connected to our past painful experiences or even our missteps. I have a friend who was a battered wife, and eventually opened up a women's shelter. My sister was relentlessly teased as a young girl and now serves as an amazing youth pastor (she is intentional about building honor into the lives of her teens). I know of a Bible scholar who, when she was a teen, was especially tempted to do drugs (and she did). Later on she recognized that the devil saw her potential and worked to sabotage her call before she ever realized she had a gift. Well, she ended up a college professor and works to teach her students how to steward the gift of their minds.

It's far too easy to become so introspective about our past pains and missteps, that we miss the greater opportunity before us. What if? What if we dared to turn the tables on the enemy by making something of our suffering? What if we dared give God the broken pieces of our lives and asked Him to do something great with our offering? You know what? That's what He does best.

Whatever gaps there are from our past, whatever potholes we tripped over, God can fill them in and bring restoration. He not only wants to heal what's broken, He wants to pour in wisdom where there once was brokenness that we might be of service to others.

It's time to think BIG! What God-sized thing is God asking of you at this stage of your journey? When our boys were growing up, we constantly challenged them, "We cannot please God without faith. So, what are you believing God for these days?"

Also, woven into our spiritual DNA is evidence of our calling. If you have children, look for it in them. Notice how they respond to some of life's inequalities. Take Moses, for instance. One day while walking among the Jewish slaves, he saw an Egyptian beating on of his fellow Hebrews. Moses stepped in (but he mis-stepped by killing the man and covering it up). Another time, during his journey to the land of Midian, Moses stepped in and stood up to a few shepherds who were bullying the daughters of a priest. Moses was a stand-in-the-gap sort of man.

But, when the moment came and God called Moses to step up, what was his response?

"But I can't speak. I'm a clumsy speaker! They'll never listen to me! I can't do this!!!" Moses argued with God.

Here's the deal. When God calls us to step up, it'll never seem like an opportune moment. He calls us for 'such a time as THIS." Though we would prefer more margin in our schedule, more money in our bank account, and more spring in our step, God prefers to find His people willing and ready when He calls. Those moments never seem like the right moment for us, but as far as God is concerned, they are precisely the right moments to serve His Kingdom purposes.

May we give God the whole of who we are. May we ask Him to heal and restore us and make us new again. May we dare to ask Him to use us in mind-boggling ways. He loves such requests!

But know this, when He calls us, we WILL be tempted to look down, to take a 'natural inventory' and to measure it against the task at hand. When we do this, we will come up short every time. We may protest because of our limited inventory. But, during such times, God simply asks us, "What's that in your hand? Let's use that."

Read God's response after Moses expressed his doubts and insecurities:

Then the Lord said to Moses, "Pay close attention to this. I will make you seem like God to Pharaoh."

That verse about knocked my socks off.

When God is for us, who can stand against us? When He calls us to it, He'll bring us through it. When He leads us to a need, He'll provide every step of the way. For the Christ-follower, God is in us, works through us, and surrounds us like a shield. We are called to make a God-sized-impact on this earth! And with Him, we can!

Right now, He's searching the earth, looking for those whose hearts are devoted to Him; those who will step out in faith, like David with Goliath, like Moses with the Pharaoh, like Peter with the religious leaders, and like Esther on behalf of her people.

For whom has He called you to advocate, speak up, or stand in the gap?

This is our watch. This is our chance to change the world. And with Him we can. And we must.

Blessings to you.

Until next week~

Mercies and the Unknown...

Now on to my topic...

As I mentioned last week, in honor of the Thanksgiving holiday, I'm devoting the Wednesdays in November to the different aspects of gratitude. Last week we addressed the blessing of our abundant and literal freedom. This week, let's look at the beauty of the unknown.

I know, the unknown seems anything but beautiful at times. Terrifying, yes. Unsettling, for sure. But beautiful? Yes, too. For sure.

Our unknown is known by Him. Jesus is already there. Which makes it perfectly and wonderfully beautiful.

Read one of my favorite verses: You both precede and follow me; You place your hand of blessing upon my head (Psalm 139:5).

I'm going through a bit of an unknown season in life. With the writing and then the release of my 'Freedom' book came a slew of spiritual attack and opposition. I poured my heart and soul into this book and I knew the results would be up to God. And they are. Still, I don't know what those results will be. Every time I speak on this topic, we see God move and lives changed, and yet all of the opposition behind the scenes leaves me feeling like I've just been beat up and pushed around by the enemy of my soul - each and every time. But I will obey and trust the Lord with the outcome because He is with me and He is ahead of me.

This spring I have another book coming out titled, "Growing Grateful Kids." I'm excited about this book; it's both funny and deep. I also have a full speaking schedule. But then you look ahead to next fall and I've sensed the Lord telling me not to take too many speaking events. Behind the scenes there are some opportunities before me that could result in a pretty drastic shift in ministry. Or...God could be leading me into a season of hiddenness and refining. I don't know. I'm tempted at times to panic about the potential shift of momentum. But He's already there, so it's a blessed and beautiful place. And I don't want anything that He doesn't want for me.

Check out the picture at the top of this blog. I took this beautiful sunrise picture this morning with my phone. What a spectacular, creative, artistic God we serve! His mercies are new and lovely every morning. His faithfulness is powerfully great.

What about your life makes you feel apprehensive? When you look at your future, do you see too many variables that make you feel unsettled? Can you thank Him even here?

Though unknown to us, our future is not hidden from God. He is already there. He has prepared fresh mercies to touch us and bless us for all of our tomorrows. His grace is sufficient for us. His power is perfected in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). He has taken it upon Himself to cover us, care for us, lead us, and strengthen us.

Over and over again He instructs us to be anxious for nothing, be strong and courageous, let not our hearts be troubled, and to trust Him in all things. All of these directives imply that we have a choice in the matter. He supplies. We lay hold of His supply. He is. We decide to become.

Thank Him for His wisdom in the way He leads you. Thank Him - by faith - for the beautiful unknown path ahead of you. He is always good; always acting in love; always offering support; always supplying; constantly present, and completely engaged.

SO much for which to be thankful.

Blessed be the Name of the Lord.

Free to Thank Him...

Now on to my topic...

In honor of the Thanksgiving holiday (blessings to my Canadian friends, I know you already celebrated your Thanksgiving holiday), I would like to take the next four weeks to explore what it means to embrace a heart of gratitude. And this week, in celebration of my new release, let's wrap our arms around the idea of being thankful for the freedoms we enjoy.

The holidays are before us. And it's about this time every year that our motors get running on overdrive and we keep that pedal to the metal until the morning of January 1st. We wake up with an empty tank, iron eyelids and heavy feet, and we wonder how the last month and a half sped by us in such a blur.

Well, not this year!

Let's decide together to pull over to the side of the road on occasion and enjoy a sunset or watch the trees blow in the breeze. Let's take a few extra minutes to chat with a friend or enjoy a cup of coffee. Let's make it our practice (for the next couple of months especially), to pause, give thanks, and enjoy the incredible gifts that surround us.

Why? Because we can.

Here's an excerpt from 'Embracing Your Freedom':

"What an exorbitant privilege to hop into the car and drive to a coffeehouse for a $4 cup of coffee. What a treasured freedom to decide whether or not to go to bed early. Taking our kids to the park, enjoying a day at the beach, devouring Christian books, praying in broad daylight, watching back-to-back movies on a cold, rainy day; all of these priceless gems make us rich indeed.

Has your holy tenacity waned a bit? Begin by thanking God for the blessings you enjoy and the land you currently possess. Walk the boundaries of your home and count every square inch a treasure. Look at the pictures on your wall. They're yours. Trace the outline of the windows that allow you to look out where the birds sing and the sun shines. If you have children, place your hand on their heads and whisper a prayer of thanks. Next time you go to church, look around. Be amazed that you are free to come and go as you please. Notice your portion of land; be thankful for it. Simply by expressing your gratitude to God out loud, you'll bring courage to your heart and strength to your soul. When you start counting your blessings, you'll feel the wind in your sails once again." (pp. 25, 31).

This week, make it your practice to notice all of the freedoms you enjoy. You can go to Bible study, or to the health club, or to the coffee shop, or even to church, without fear for your life. You are not bound in chains or owned by a vicious slave driver who pushes you relentlessly day in and day out. You have a life. A beautiful, free life. Yes, there are flaws in the fabric, sure there are trials to overcome, but step back - as often as you think of it this week - and marvel at your freedom. Give thanks to God. He's so very good.

And as you do it, you'll say, "Give thanks to God. Call out his name. Ask him anything! Shout to the nations, tell them what he's done, spread the news of his great reputation! (Isaiah 12:4 MSG).

New Things...

Backyard Fall

Greetings, Everyone!

Susie Larson here...

And to those visiting, I say welcome. Okay, here's where I usually mention that I post every Wednesday, and I do, really. I think I've been AWOL only a few times in the past several years. This past Wednesday was one of those days. As some of you know, I serve as an on-call radio host for a two hour talk show (Along the Way - AM 900 - Faith Radio Network). Anyway, I hosted the show from Wednesday through Friday and never had a minute downtime in between. So sorry I missed you.

One more little blip I need to share. This Monday I leave for Chicago on a publicity trip. I return later in the day on Wednesday. If I'm still standing upright, I'll post that night, otherwise, next week's post will show up on Thursday. We should be on track after that! Thanks for your patience.

Two more orders of business...

Now, on to my topic...

A couple of hours ago I enjoyed a nice cardio workout at the YMCA. While I worked up a sweat on the machines, I stared out the window at the beautiful sky. Hazy clouds took on a yellowish glow as the sun reflected through them. Our great God, who put the stars in their place, is intimately engaged with us on this journey. He is a present and loving Father. He is our help in time of need. And He is beyond good when it comes to the desires of our heart.

While there is much focus and emphasis on all that is crumbling in our midst, God is still doing a new thing. You've heard it said, "When closes a door, He opens a window." As cliche as that may sound, it's beautifully true. He loves His children. He hears our passionate cries and He moves heaven and earth to get good gifts to His children.

But sometimes those 'gifts' don't always feel so good.

When God opens up a new opportunity and shows us a new possibility, the thought of it excites us, right? But when we take the steps to move in that direction, our sense of security falters. We're leaving the 'known zone' for something altogether different. And just because we feel a little (or a lot) afraid, does it mean that God is not in it? Not necessarily! His peace is our guide and if we have no peace, we should take no steps in that direction. But if His peace is present and His word is confirmed in us, then we need to move ahead regardless of how uncomfortable the unknown might be.

I wrote this in my new book, "Embracing Your Freedom" and it's important to remember:

When God says, 'Go!' it's more dangerous to stay behind. There is less risk in moving into the unknown than in lagging behind in disobedience and unbelief."

Are the 'known' things slipping out of your fingertips? Is your once comfortable existence shaking beneath you? How easy it is to be swallowed up in despair and fear! But have no fear! God still answers prayers, still cares about the desires of your heart, and He does new things every single day. He is doing a new thing on your behalf right now.

As uncomfortable as it might feel, embrace the unknown if that's where He's leading you. Take His hand and trust His heart. He is good and He is totally and completely in love with you.

"Yet, I still belong to You. You are holding my right hand. You will keep on guiding me with Your counsel, leading me on to a glorious destiny" (Psalm 73:23).

~ Until next Wednesday (or Thursday). :)

Have a blessed week.

Embracing Your Freedom

Now on to my topic...

We all go through seasons in life where we feel especially vulnerable and our insecurities feel close to the surface. During such times it's easy to misread people and situations.

A trusted friend suddenly seems disloyal and distant. A co-worker pulls back and seems to be spending time with someone who doesn't like you. You walk into church and nobody seems interested in talking to you. Your pastor walks right by without noticing you. You no longer feel like you have your boss's favor.

When one or more of these scenarios happen in a short amount of time, it's easy to connect the dots, draw certain conclusions, and then react accordingly. Just recently I talked with someone who had a number of 'dots' out there. He had some legitimate reason for concern, but deep in his soul, he sensed that God was telling him to believe the best about others, not to jump to conclusions, and to continue on with doing the right thing.

His response was exactly right and at the end of the day, the little mishaps fizzled to nothing. Imagine if he would have taken the bait, gotten big and reactionary with his friends and co-workers, and stepped out of the authority and assurance that he had in Christ Jesus.

We may have some real 'dots' out there, just begging to be connected, but that doesn't mean that the picture actually exists or is an accurate one. We need the mind of Christ not to draw wrong conclusions.

From now on, we regard no one from a worldly point of view (2 Corinthians 5:16).

I cringe when I think of how many times I assumed people had bad motives when they didn't, or I assumed they we're mad when they weren't. Thankfully, many of those times, I kept my feelings to myself and brought them before God that I might find my footing once again. Interestingly enough though, I learned that in many of those situations, those people we're enduring their own struggles and would have greatly benefited from an extra dose of grace and love (which comes out of fullness; reactions, on the other hand, come out of emptiness).

We all tend to misread people and situations when something in them resembles a past painful experience for us. We must take responsibility for our actions and reactions, and we must pursue deep inner healing so that our past no longer has the power to diminish our current perspective and relationships. Remember too, the enemy overplays his hand when it comes to our unhealed areas. He prowls around, just looking for an opportunity to magnify a problem or skew a perspective. His goal is to get our eyes off of God and onto our fears and hang ups. He wants our past to keep speaking to us. He wants our wounds to perpetuate themselves. And he wants us stuck in the prison of an earthbound perspective.

You've probably heard me say this before, or read it in one of my books, but it bears repeating. If the devil can get us to live in reaction to our circumstances rather than in response to God, well, then, he has succeeded at stealing our joy and robbing us of the abundant life to which our souls are heir.

Determine to believe the best in others this week. Even if their motives are off, you stay in the shelter of the Most High God and declare, My salvation and honor depend on God alone. HE is my mighty rock and refuge (Psalm 62:7). Determine too, to believe the best about God. He has your best interest at heart every single day. Even if your circumstances scream something different, refuse to draw a conclusion that disregards God's promises to you.

For the Believer, the only conclusion that matters is the one God has come to regarding us. We are worth everything to Him. We are loved, called, equipped, and chosen. We have everything we need and then some.

Have a blessed week~

PS ~ I took the picture above with my phone from my deck. Look closely at it; you'll see a cross in the clouds. It was HUGE!
