A Place of Safety & Significance...

Newbergs in the Fall

Greetings, Dear Friends!

Susie Larson here...

And to those visiting, I say welcome! I post every Wednesday and my sole purpose is to nourish your soul along the way. Each month I give away a $10.00 Starbucks gift card to someone who posts on my blog. So leave a comment, share a story or insight, and just maybe you'll win a jolt of java for you and a friend!

It's time to announce the winner for the month of August. Drum roll, please...

Kelly Black, you've won a $10.00 gift card from Starbucks! Email me at: info@susielarson.com with your mailing address and we'll get the card out within 1-2 weeks. (PS - you must claim your prize before I announce next month's winner). Blessings one and all!

As most of you know, I have a new radio show, Live the Promise with Susie Larson. The program airs every Saturday morning from noon to 1:00 CST. And guess what? We are going live on weekdays starting in October! More details to follow...

And, a quick note about this week's show! You won't want to miss my interview with Lisa Cherry and her daughter Kalyn as they talk about how a family friend from church, who was three times Kayln's age, lured her into a phone-sex relationship that almost destroyed her life. Kalyn's mom is a popular speaker with Acquire the Fire and this was a powerful interview about protecting your family. Listen in on KTIS AM 900, or listen online at: www.faith900.com

Now on to my topic...

Okay, I'm going to get this out of the way at the outset: what I'm about to share may or may not make sense to you, but this is what God has been speaking to me these days, and it's what I feel I'm supposed to share with you. So here goes...

I've just come through a transitional season of life. And I learned that with such a season, comes the temptation to wonder too much; to worry too much; and to grab for a quick solution rather than wait for God's best solution. During times of transition when things don't exactly feel predictable, it's easy to look to your right and to your left, and to commit the sin of comparison.

One morning while praying my way through my process, the Lord spoke this to my heart, "Your place during this season is to stay especially close to Me. Your posture is to be that of a 'Grateful Slave.'

I loved how Jude introduced himself at the beginning of the book of Jude. He identified himself as follows: A bondservant of the Most High God and the brother of James.

We are too quick to lay claim to our successes and also, too quick to bear the shame of our past sins. And yet, under the new covenant, we can claim neither of those as our own. We are made new and hidden in Christ.

I am a grateful bondservant of the Most High God; so thankful to even be linked in fellowship with Him. I refuse to look to the right or to the left, or to compare myself with those who are more or less successful than I am. (I've said this here before, but...) Those comparisons bear rotten fruit: either pride or despair.

As I keep my face in His hands I remember who I am to Him and who He is to me.

The Bible says that God actually has to humble Himself to behold the things of Heaven! Imagine that! He is so awesome and mighty, He has to stoop down to look upon heaven and earth (Psalm 113). This is the God I serve.

When I narrow the distance between us, and I take my rightful place as a humble servant of the Most High God, there is no room for stomping feet and shaking fists, because I have no entitlement, no claim to anything except His love - which is everything. When I narrow the distance between us, I have no room in my life for fear, doubt, worry, or insecurity because I am beloved of the One who is higher than the Heavens.

When you take your position as a Grateful Slave - He gets the credit, He gets the glory. There's no room for comparison, competition, or jealousy. This is HIS Kingdom we serve, His Kingdom we are building; we are miraculously blessed to be a part. Only what is done for Christ will last. We are blessed to be a blessing.

We get out of sync with our 'rights and our purposes' when we get out of step with His love and His greatness. We are everything to Him, but nothing without Him.

Our safest place, our most significant place is that of a Grateful Slave; bound to Him in love, connected to Him by faith; kept by His grace, established in His purposes.

The amazing thing is, when we humble ourselves before Him, He sets us in high places, with the princes of His people (Psalm 113). When we take our rightful place before Him, He lifts us up to places we have no business being if not for His endorsement and favor. But first and foremost, every day, and always, we are humbly His. He gets to decide how we serve, where we serve, and when we serve.

I'd rather scrub floors in the house of my God, than be honored as a guest in the palace of sin. All sunshine and sovereign is God; generous in gifts and glory (Psalm 84:10 MSG).

~Until next week

Amen, Susie! Not sure why this wouldn't make sense, unless we aren't using God's lexicon, which is often so different from ours. (Consider his definitions of "love," "goodness," "believe." for which we often hold pale or distored secularized and self-centered definitions.)

How very timely. And yay for you to step out on what seems like a shaky limb and share this. Thank you for your faith.Timely, because I am reading some Christian fiction (something I never thought I would crack the spine of) and the book is all about being a slave-literally, in the eyes of the world-and spiritually,a slave to God. Even as a slave, this character is more free than the possession bound "free" people that she serves. It's fiction, of course, but it has caused me to pull the blinders back just that much farther, to see what I am REALLY enslaved to.I love that verse in the bible-" bondservant of the Most High God" Declared so boldly. Like "Happily bound! you can try to pry me away, but God will never let me go!"Thanks for sharing. I love when things like that come together.(PS, reading Francine Rivers-A voice in the wind. great story, just be prepared for some horrific gory details that depict life in the years in Rome after Jesus died.)

"transitional season of life" - I love how you phrased that and put it into perspective for me, thank you Susie. God has to humble himself - that one always blows my mind. I often wonder, am I being humble enough?Blessings to you!

Once again Jesus speaks to my heart through your words! I can't even say how transitional my transitional time is right now! He is teaching me contentment in him and not my circumstances. At times though I so want to stomp my little child foot and pout my lip and demand release "if you love me"! Thank you for reminding me of the beauty and safety in staying close to his heart!

"During times of transition when things don't exactly feel predictable, it's easy to look to your right and to your left, and to commit the sin of comparison." ... It is encouraging to me that you too face the temptation to do so. ... Not that I wish this for you, but it makes me understand that you too face this, even with all of your experience and living out the promise. Your raw sharing brings great encouragement. Thank you for sharing and being real. I admire and am inspired by the honest message both yourself and Joyce Meyer bring to those who will listen. Keep your face in His hands - you ARE in a very special place.

He decides. OK. Still hurts, but differently, and it's a pain toward life not death.

oh boy i hear you susie! we are in a transition time too - our foster son's sister comes this tuesday to stay and i have been feeling the temptation to worry about how in the world this is all going to work. BUT the Lord in His loving way, continues to remind me that He is right with me. He has called us to this, He will equip us. He will strengthen us. I do not have to fear. I need Him so desperately and I am so thankful I can trust Him. And I know I can - He is SO faithful! Praise Him! Praying for you too! Excited about what God is doing in and through you!!

Jesus had a "secret ambition" (as the Michael W. Smith song goes) and that was to humble himself to the horrible and humiliating death on the cross. And the disciples, and other followers were devastated. All the glory, recognition, connection with the One they were following was shattered.

I have found that to make that kind of sacrifice in our own lives is very hard. Sometimes we have to humble ourselves in ways we don't like. We all worship the god of recognition, and ambition: even as leaders in the church or even sometimes ministers.

The humility God seeks, is the one He rewards. All glory goes to Him. People shouldn't say, "Wow look at (insert your name here, or your church's name here.) They should say, I want to know and love the God they love.

I couldn't agree more with anything you have written Susie. Thanks for the words.

Hi Susie! Your point about comparisons really changed my perspective this week! I just realized how much I've been doing it without even thinking and how right you are...it is a sin. I have never put it in such terms but it makes complete sense. And it is such a common daily thing we seem to fall into! I'm really challenged to seek the Lord to help my heart stay humble and satisfied looking only to Him! Thank you and blessings!

Ellen,

You are right. The idea of a 'Grateful Slave' makes perfect sense to the bond servant of Christ. Bless you!

Dear Beck,

Thanks for your honest post! I think you speak for all of us. We all have that foot-stomping-child within us. I think God is leveraging the times to train us up in the faith so that we can be found standing when it's all said and done. May we last long and finish strong! Blessings to you~
